Artist Statement

I am interested in exploring the many layers, rhythms, and patterns of the natural world.  My works are visual explorations of common themes.  I frequently work in oil and cold wax which lends itself to a freer, more abstract form of art.  I paint for the love of art and learning, and have fun in the process of exploration.

I am inspired by my view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from my studio on Dancing Ridge in Saluda, NC and the natural elements around me.  My work is also informed by personal experiences and emotions.  Reflecting on the landscape where I live or recalling a visual  from my travels or my childhood brings me images and ideas for painting.  I enjoy exploring these spaces through both abstract and landscape design.    I often begin each painting intuitively with explorations of mark-making, colors, shapes, and textures.

Creating this way allows me to stay open to the process.  There is a moment when the painting begins to speak to me.  At this point I begin to consider formal aspects of composition and design to guide the painting to a balanced resolution.  I strive for my paintings to offer a moment of calm reflection and a chance for viewers to connect to their imagination, thoughts, and emotions. It’s a delicate dance connecting both energy and emotion while conveying a sense of place and quiet space.

After many years of art teaching, I am now able to devote much of my time to my own creative process.

My Process:

My work is process driven and multi-layered.  It is an exploration in mark-making, layering, drawing into the piece, and scraping back those layers using a range of tools and techniques - adding, subtracting, concealing, and revealing. A kin to nature’s cycles and the ebb and flow of the seasons and life, these layers create a sense of history within a single piece.  I hope to capture the viewer’s imagination, whether working abstractly or in a landscape format.  I encourage viewers to examine the work up close, take in the details, perhaps find meaning that transcends ordinary perspectives and be intrigued by the mysteries within each piece.

As a contemporary artist, my painting style does not remain at a standstill but continues to develop creatively.  I am always open to change. What emerges within the work  is influenced by my emotional connections, processes, techniques, and the medium at hand.  It is always influenced by the myriad of colors, shapes, textures and patterns found in the beautiful landscape of Dancing Ridge and natural elements that surround me.
